Get your free estimateAmarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Amarr cable and drum replacement in San Antonio typically runs $130 – $250 installed, and we carry the parts on our trucks for most Amarr residential models, so the repair is usually finished the same day you call. Owners usually discover the problem when the door hangs crooked, jerks on one side going up, or one cable goes slack while the other stays taut. Sometimes it’s a frayed cable that finally snapped at the bottom bracket, and sometimes the drum itself has a worn groove or a set screw that let go. Either way, when one side of the lifting system is compromised, the door is not safe to operate and the good side is taking all the load, so the failure tends to get worse fast.
Which Amarr Models This Applies To
Amarr builds its residential doors around a few distinct series lines, and the cable and drum specs generally track with the door’s height, width, and weight, not just the model name. We routinely replace cables and drums on Amarr Lincoln, Stratford, Oak Summit, and Classica doors across San Antonio, and the compatibility questions are always the same: door height (7 feet, 8 feet, or less commonly taller), drum diameter (most Amarr residential doors use a 4-inch drum, though some of the heavier wood-look and insulated models step up to a larger taper), and cable length, which is matched to the track radius and the amount of cable that wraps the drum at full open. The factory sticker on the end stile or the inside of the door panel gives us most of what we need, but we’ll also measure the drum and cable on site rather than trust a faded label. Amarr’s own replacement cables are well-made and worth using when the door still has its original hardware, but there are quality aftermarket drums and aircraft-grade galvanized cables that hold up just as well for less money on older doors. We’ll show you both options and give you a written price before anything gets swapped.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door hangs crooked in the opening or stops partway up. One cable has stretched or is about to let go, and the unbalanced load is twisting the door against the tracks.
- Visible fraying or broken strands on the cable near the bottom bracket. This is the most common failure point on Amarr doors in San Antonio’s humidity, which accelerates corrosion at the cable’s loop and crimp.
- One cable is slack while the other is tight. The drum on the tight side is still holding, and the slack side has either slipped off the drum or the cable has stretched beyond spec.
- Grinding, popping, or the door jerks through the first foot of travel. A worn drum groove grabs the cable unevenly, and the resulting jerking puts extra strain on the torsion spring above.
- You hear the door running but see the cable wrapped unevenly around the drum. That overlap or “bird’s nest” wrap is a drum alignment problem, and it will chew through a new cable in weeks if it’s not corrected.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Amarr doors here in San Antonio, the installed price for cable replacement lands in the $130 – $250 range, and drum replacement typically adds within that same window depending on whether the drum is a standard 4-inch or a larger taper-style unit. The variables are the door size and weight, how many cables and drums need replacing (we usually recommend both sides at once so the door stays balanced), and whether the torsion spring also needs adjustment after the new parts go in. The written price we hand you before work starts covers the parts, the labor, the spring tension adjustment, and a trip charge. It does not change once you approve it. Every Amarr cable and drum replacement we do is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year from the date of repair, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect a few things yourself: look at the cables where they attach to the bottom brackets, check for frayed strands or rust at the crimp, and watch whether the door hangs straight with the opener released. What you should not do is remove or loosen anything connected to a cable or drum, because those cables are under several hundred pounds of tension from the torsion spring above the door. When a cable snaps or a set screw strips while the spring is wound, the release is violent and the cable itself can do serious damage. This is one we’d rather handle for you. Aaron Teague and the rest of our crew have replaced enough San Antonio Amarr cables and drums to know exactly which tool picks the tension safely and which shortcut you never take. If your door is sagging or the cable is already off the drum, leave the door alone and call us at (806) 491-1594. We’ll give you a straight answer over the phone and a written price before any work begins.
FAQs
On a properly maintained Amarr door in San Antonio’s heat and humidity, cables typically last 8 to 12 years and drums can go 15 or more, but the real limiter is usually the cable’s crimped end corroding first. Doors that are used multiple times daily or sat unmaintained through a few rainy seasons will show wear sooner. Call (806) 491-1594 and we’ll tell you honestly whether you can wait or should replace now.
If the drum’s groove is clean and the cable snapped or frayed at the bottom bracket, we can often replace the cable only and rebalance the door for the $130 – $250 range. If the drum is scored, wobbling on the shaft, or the cable has cut a second groove into it, the drum needs to go too, or the new cable will fail early. We’ll show you the drum before we quote it.
Most single-side and both-side cable and drum replacements on Amarr doors take 45 to 90 minutes on site, assuming the torsion spring is in usable condition and the door tracks are still aligned. We carry the common Amarr drums, cables, and hardware on the truck so there’s rarely a second trip.
We stock standard 7-foot and 8-foot Amarr-compatible cables, 4-inch drums, and the taper drums used on many Classica and insulated models on our service trucks in San Antonio. If you have an unusual Amarr configuration, we’ll source the exact match and give you a timeline and a written price before you commit to anything.
