Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Genie cable and drum replacement in San Antonio typically runs $130 – $250 installed, depending on whether one side or both sides have failed and which Genie model you have. Most cable and drum failures can be repaired same day, and we keep Genie-compatible cable and drum kits on the truck for the common residential models. You’ll usually know this part has failed because your door suddenly hangs crooked, one side sags, or the door won’t lift evenly and makes a grinding noise near the top.

The cable wraps around a drum mounted above the door, and together they handle the lifting as the spring does its work. When a cable snaps or a drum cracks, the door stops behaving like a door and starts behaving like a liability. In San Antonio’s heat and humidity, we see cables fray and drums wear faster than manufacturers expect, especially on doors that get opened four or five times a day.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie residential garage doors fall into a few broad series: the IntelliG, TriloG, and the older ProMax and Screw Drive lines, plus the builder-grade models installed in a lot of San Antonio homes from the mid-2000s onward. The cable and drum setup differs by door weight and track height, not just the opener. Standard 7-foot doors use a smaller drum with a specific cable length; 8-foot doors need a longer cable and a drum with a different profile. If your home has a 7-foot door but someone previously installed an 8-foot cable, the cable will bind and fray within months. That’s one of the most common mistakes we correct in San Antonio.

Identifying the right part without a manual is easier than most people expect. Look at the drum itself: Genie uses a stamped steel drum with a cast-in channel, and the cable should wrap cleanly in that channel. If the cable is riding up over itself or wearing a groove into the drum’s outer lip, you’re already looking at replacement. We always recommend Genie OEM cables and drums when the door is under five years old. After that, quality aftermarket equivalents from stock we’ve tested hold up just as well and save you money. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Genie, so we install whichever option serves your door best and we’ll show you both prices before any work begins.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • One side of the door hangs lower than the other. This means one cable has snapped or slipped off the drum, and the remaining cable is carrying the full load. Every cycle now wears the good side faster.
  • The door jerks or shudders on the way up. A cable that’s fraying but not yet broken will catch and release inside the drum channel, causing visible chattering in the door’s movement.
  • You can hear a scraping or grinding from the top corners. When the drum’s lip is cracked or the cable has chewed into it, every open and close grinds metal against metal.
  • The door stops partway up or won’t stay level. A drum that’s slipped out of indexed alignment with the other side means the cables are feeding at different rates, and the door will bind in the track.
  • Visible rust, nicks, or “fuzzy” strands on the cable itself. San Antonio’s humidity cycle, dry summers and damp shoulders, accelerates cable rust, especially in garages that hold pool equipment or a water heater.

Any one of these signals is enough to stop using the door. The door will still look like it might work, and that’s what makes it dangerous.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Genie cable and drum replacements across the San Antonio metro, the installed price runs $130 – $250. That number includes the cable or drum kit, the labor to unload the spring tension safely (this is not a part of the job you want done casually), and realignment of both sides after installation. We quote the full number in writing before the first bolt comes off, so there’s never a conversation at the end about a different number than the one you started with. And the repair carries our full 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cable or drum fails within 365 days, we come back at no charge and make it right. Written, not verbal.

What drives the range: single-side failures land at the low end since we recommend replacing only what’s failed; a matched pair replacement lands higher, and on the common two-car San Antonio door it’s the right call when the original parts are the same age. Doors with unusual track heights, rusted hardware, or cable that’s snapped and whipped the shaft out of alignment land at the top of the range. You’ll always know your number before we start.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect the cables and drums from the floor with the door closed and the opener unplugged. Look at the cable for rust, nicks, or frays, and sight down each side to confirm the door sits level. What you should not do is attempt the replacement yourself. The cable and drum work together with the torsion spring, the large metal coil mounted above the door, which is under enough tension to cause serious injury if that tension accidentally releases. We train for this; you shouldn’t have to. In San Antonio, where doors get heavy use year-round, a failed cable left unrepaired puts constant rotational load where the spring and drum meet, and that’s how doors come off their tracks entirely.

If your door is showing any uneven lift, fraying, or grinding, call (806) 491-1594 and we’ll send a technician who arrives with the parts most likely to match your Genie on the truck. The call is answered by a real person every time, day, night, weekend, or holiday.
